Storm Damage &
Insurance Guidance

Honest assessments. Thorough documentation. We help you understand the process — without overpromising outcomes.

Safety First — Always

Before thinking about your roof, make sure you and your family are safe. Here are the critical safety priorities after a severe storm.

Downed Power Lines

Stay at least 30 feet away from any downed lines. Call 911 and Duke Energy immediately. Do not approach.

Structural Damage

If walls are leaning, ceilings are sagging, or you hear cracking, evacuate and call emergency services.

Gas Leaks

If you smell gas, leave immediately, do not use electrical switches, and call 911 and your gas utility.

Do Not Climb the Roof

Wet or damaged roofs are extremely dangerous. Let trained professionals handle post-storm inspections.

What to Look For

Storm Damage Warning Signs

Some storm damage is obvious; some requires a trained eye. These are the most common indicators that your roof may have been compromised.

Hail Dents on Shingles

Dark circular impact marks where hail has knocked granules off the shingle surface.

Lifted or Missing Shingles

High winds can lift shingle tabs or remove them entirely, exposing the underlayment.

Debris on the Roof

Fallen branches or debris can puncture roofing materials or damage flashing.

Damaged Gutters

Hail often dents aluminum gutters — visible gutter damage is a strong indicator of roof impact.

Granules in Gutters

A surge of granules washing into gutters after a storm indicates shingle surface loss.

Interior Ceiling Stains

New water stains after a storm indicate the roof system was breached.

The Process

Understanding the Insurance Claim Process

A general overview of how the process typically works. Every policy and situation is different — consult your insurer for specifics.

Important: SlatePeak Roofing assists homeowners with documentation and professional inspection reports. We do not file claims on your behalf, negotiate with insurers, or guarantee that any claim will be approved or paid. Insurance coverage decisions are made exclusively by your insurance carrier based on your policy terms.

1

Review Your Policy

Locate your homeowners insurance policy. Note your deductible amount and whether you have ACV (actual cash value) or RCV (replacement cost value) coverage.

2

Document Damage Safely

Photograph all visible exterior damage from ground level. Note the date and time of the storm. Keep records of any temporary protective measures you take.

3

File a Claim Promptly

Contact your insurance company as soon as possible. Most policies require timely reporting. Ask about your claim timeline and what documentation they need.

4

Schedule a Professional Inspection

A qualified roofing contractor can inspect your roof and provide a written damage report. This documentation can be useful when your insurance adjuster visits.

SlatePeak provides written inspection reports. We do not negotiate claims or guarantee coverage decisions — those are made solely by your insurer.

5

Insurance Adjuster Visit

Your insurer will send an adjuster to assess the damage. Having a professional inspection report beforehand helps ensure all damage is considered.

6

Review the Claim Decision

Your insurer will issue a claim decision. If you disagree with the assessment, you have the right to request a re-inspection or consult a licensed public adjuster.

FAQ

Storm & Insurance Questions

No. We cannot and do not guarantee any insurance outcome. Claim decisions are made solely by your insurance carrier based on your specific policy. We provide professional inspection reports and documentation that you can use in your claim process.

You can do either first. Many homeowners prefer to get a professional inspection first so they have documentation before calling their insurer. Others file the claim first and then get an inspection. Either approach can work — consult your policy for any specific requirements.

A supplement is an additional claim submitted when the initial insurance estimate does not cover all the damage found during installation. We document all findings thoroughly, but we do not handle the supplementing process — that is between you and your insurer.

Not necessarily. Coverage depends on your specific policy, deductible, and the extent and type of damage found. We recommend speaking directly with your insurance agent about your coverage.

Place buckets or towels to protect interior belongings, move valuables away from the affected area, and call us immediately for emergency tarping. Document everything with photos for your insurance claim.
